On Wednesday evening, reports emerged from Spain that Alexander Isak was spotted in the San Sabastian region of Spain as he continues to train separately from the Newcastle squad.
The decision to train in Spain rather than remain in Newcastle appears to be a calculated move by Isak as he pushes for a transfer to Liverpool.
Having represented Real Sociedad from 2019 to 2022 before his £63 million move to Newcastle, the striker has maintained strong connections with his former club.
Real Sociedad have a vested interest in any potential Isak transfer, holding a 10% sell-on clause for any fee above €70 million, plus an additional 2% through FIFA’s Solidarity Programme.
This financial incentive may explain their willingness to accommodate their former player during this uncertain period.
Now Sky Sports have confirmed that this is indeed the case, casting further doubt on the Swede’s future at St James’ Park:
“Alexander Isak is training individually at his former club Real Sociedad’s training facilities amid uncertainty over his Newcastle future,” Sky Sports News’ Amar Mehta and Keith Downie reported.
“It is understood Newcastle are aware of Isak’s whereabouts as he recovers from the “minor thigh injury” that the club say has kept him from travelling to Singapore for their pre-season tour.”
“Isak has informed Newcastle he wants to explore his options in this transfer window after Liverpool made an informal approach for the striker.”
“The former Real Sociedad striker is using the Basque club’s facilities with his staff when they are empty for his recovery.”
While Isak trains in the Spanish sunshine, Liverpool have been quietly orchestrating the financial framework for what could become British football’s most expensive transfer.
The Reds have already agreed personal terms with Isak for a contract running until 2031, according to Sky Germany.
The sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for €75 million has provided Liverpool with significant additional funds to pursue Isak.
Combined with their existing transfer budget and potential sales of Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott, and Federico Chiesa, Liverpool appear well-positioned to meet Newcastle’s expectations.
