Liverpool are waiting to pounce as Alexander Isak’s transfer saga reaches a pivotal week.

Reds fans have had an exciting summer so far but the best could still be yet to come as they might be close to breaking the British transfer record for the second time this summer.

Liverpool desperately wanted to bring Isak to Anfield and the player wants exactly the same, but the ball is now in Newcastle’s court as they have the final say.

The Swede did not go on their pre-season tour, handed in a transfer request and trained alone back at Real Sociedad in Spain, a key indication of where his head is at.

However, the 25-year-old returned to the Newcastle training ground on Monday, with many people wondering why, although that has now been revealed.

When Isak did not go on Newcastle’s pre-season tour to Singapore, Eddie Howe originally stated a thigh injury as the reason.

However, it later became evident that a scan came back all clear and the real reason was due to him wanting a move away, an event that was the start of this transfer saga.

But now, Sky Sports journalist Pete Graves has confirmed that the Swede was actually at the training ground to get some treatment on the so-called injury, indicating that he might genuinely have a slight niggle.

Graves also confirmed that neither Howe nor any of Isak’s teammates were there as they only flew back on Sunday night from South Korea, with everyone having the day off.

So, if Liverpool fans were hoping that he would be having a meeting regarding his future, that will have to wait for a little while longer, although that is expected to happen in the coming days.

Isak is also expected to return to usual training despite Howe’s fierce warning, suggesting it might be a rather awkward few days for the striker.

At this stage of the saga, it appears to be beyond the point of no return, suggesting Newcastle may feel they now have to sell, even if they are incredibly reluctant to do so.

Alan Shearer has urged Newcastle to sell, showing just how fed up their fans are of the situation, although they will need to sign a replacement first.

Benjamin Sesko should decide his future in the coming days, and if he joins the Magpies, it should sanction the sale of Isak.

Liverpool will only make a second bid if they are actually willing to sell, indicating that they must now just play the waiting game.

The new season starts in just under two weeks’ time, but it will certainly be a race against the clock if Isak is to make the switch to Merseyside.
