Several of the Premier League’s top players gathered for the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Awards last night in Manchester, but one notable name was missing from the ceremony: Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

Despite being named in the PFA Team of the Season after scoring 23 goals and helping Newcastle secure a Champions League berth, Isak chose not to attend the event.

Instead, Isak broke his silence on the ongoing saga between himself and Newcastle by posting a statement on Instagram.

In it, he expressed pride in the recognition from his fellow professionals but explained his absence.

He thanked his teammates and Newcastle but said that “with everything going on, it didn’t feel right to be there.”

He went on to say that he had kept quiet for a long time but felt that people were pushing their own version of events that did not reflect what was agreed behind closed doors.

Isak claimed that promises had been made to him that Newcastle had now broken, and with trust lost, “the relationship can’t continue.”

Now a fresh update on his potential move to Anfield has emerged.

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has reported that he is expecting Newcastle to table a bid for Yoane Wissa in the next few days.

Should the Magpies land the Brentford striker, Downie feels like Liverpool could then make their move:

“Yoane Wissa was seen as the Callum Wilson replacement, not the Alexander Isak replacement.

“If they were able to land Wissa in the next few days, and I am expecting a bid in the next couple of days, and Liverpool came to the table offering £130 million then Newcastle might have a decision to make.”

“If they are unable to bring in Wissa, then Isak will not be going anywhere and that was what the statement was saying last night.”

“If they were to find a gem with two weeks of the window to go, and bring in Wissa and Liverpool came to the table with a significantly higher bid, then I think Isak will be allowed to go.”
