Yesterday, news broke from from the ever-reliable Paull Joyce that Liverpool’s hopes of luring the Spaniard from Bayer Leverkusen were significantly tarnished.

This is despite since Jurgen Klopp announced he would be departing the club that Alonso was the frontrunner for the Liverpool chair.

It now, unfortunately, seems as if the Reds will have to set their sights elsewhere.

Although news has only just broke that the Anfield club are unlikely to obtain Alonso’s services this season, it means that there are new leaders for the Liverpool job.

The likes of Roberto De Zerbi, Julian Nagelsmann and Ruben Amorim are all names which have been thrown into the hat.

However, it feels as if the latter is the Reds’ ‘Plan B’ as his style of play and the way he has managed to rally his Sporting Lisbon squad this season has been nothing short of astounding.

They find themselves atop of the Liga Portugal and have only lost two domestic games thus far.

He has also managed to bring out the best in Victor Gyokeres as the former Coventry man has managed to contribute to a whopping 50 goal contributions this term.

36 of which, have come as goals, which not only shows how clinical the Sweden international has been, but, it also outlines how perfectly Amorim has played to his strengths.

Although his tactical style is different to that of Jurgen Klopp’s, he would be a solid addition to the Reds’ backroom and mark the start of a new era at the club.

As aforementioned, Alonso has seemingly decided to stay with Leverkusen for at least another campaign.

However, according to Melissa Reddy of Sky Sports, she believes that it was ‘too soon’ of a jump for Alonso to return to his former club.

“Nagging feeling with Xabi from the off, esp given his character, was it’s too soon into his Leverkusen project to exit for a bigger gig,” she stated.

“Easy with Bayern: the job likely to come again sharpish.

He’s staying true to himself and his work.”

So, although it seems as if the Spaniard has rejected Liverpool’s advances, there could be hope for a future return once he has more experience under his belt.
