‘So delighted’: Florian Wirtz’s wage at Liverpool’s proves again how good Richard Hughes is at his job

Liverpool appear to be keeping up with their reputation of being astute negotiators in the transfer market.

The Reds do not make a move for a player unless they are fully satisfied that it will benefit them on and off the pitch, and this summer is no different.

On the surface, seeing Liverpool spend £116m on Florian Wirtz alone may concern fans and suggest that it has come at such a big cost that nothing more will happen.

This is not the case, however, and signings are still expected, with all the final details for the German set to be completed by Friday as this is when Wirtz is due for his medical.

Many would also think that a superstar signing like the 22-year-old may rip up Liverpool’s wage structure and could be a massive issue going forward, although, again, this is not the case.

The Reds have just recently given Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk new deals at the club that make them the top earners – and rightly so.

Wirtz may have been expected to surpass their weekly salaries, in fact, he will actually be on less than them both, showing just how good Richard Hughes has been at doing the deal on Liverpool’s terms.

This is something journalist Ben Jacobs revealed on talkSPORT as he highlighted how smart Liverpool have been in negotiations.

“The wage is roughly £10m [a year], but it could rise to £12.5m if team and individual bonuses are hit,” Jacobs explained.

“This means Wirtz very much fits into Liverpool’s wage structure.

He’s on less than Salah, less than van Dijk, and this is why Liverpool probably feel they’ve got value for money.

“You may remember when Man City pulled out, and that might be because indicated he wanted to move to Anfield, but the City perspective was that it is just too costly with the agent fees, the transfer fees, the wage, but if you look at the deal Liverpool have got, he fits very much into their financial structure.

“That is why they are so delighted to have got this deal over the line and they have done so on their terms.”

The obvious player to go for next after Wirtz is Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, although they will not have to spend too much time on this deal as it is already nearing its completion.

Kerkez’s father has confirmed that his son will move to Liverpool and that Hughes played a key role in this deal happening, with the Hungarian following Wirtz swiftly through the door as well.

Balancing the books is the next task but once they have done that, a striker and young centre-back are the other areas that Liverpool are looking at.

Everything is happening at 100mph at Anfield this summer but Arne Slot looks like he will get the players he wants in time for pre-season, making their tour of Asia certainly one to look out for.
