Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has demanded Manchester United back him with multimillions to fix his defence, according to the London Evening Standard.

In the report, it is said that United’s Norwegian boss has cited the money Liverpool spent on Virgil van Dijk and Alisson by Jurgen Klopp as evidence his team needs to also splash cash to sort out his backline.

We would be by no means intimidated if United spent such money on such players.

Alisson and van Dijk were the jewels in the crown, but we couldn’t have done that for five positions.

Solskjaer also fails to note the brilliantly shrewd business Liverpool have done in defence; buying Andy Robertson from relegated Hull; bringing Trent through the ranks for nothing; Matip on a Bosman and Joe Gomez for peanuts from Charlton.

In truth, United are leagues behind us right now and there isn’t anything they could do this transfer window to immediately change that.

Wan-Bissaka is a significant downgrade on Trent Alexander-Arnold, while we’re not sure Maguire is necessarily an automatic upgrade on the partners we have for van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip – especially based on the latter’s performances in the Champions League.
