Joe Gomez became the subject of a multi-club transfer race on deadline day as speculation over his future at Liverpool continues, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what his sources have told him about the late rush to sign Gomez on deadline day.

After finalising the British record £125millon signing of Alexander Isak, Liverpool’s deadline day attention turned to Marc Guehi, but they were ultimately unable to finalise a move for the Crystal Palace captain.

However, sources have told Football Insider that both Palace and their rivals Brighton had explored a last-ditch deal for Gomez, only for the 28-year-old to stay at Anfield after Liverpool failed to sign Guehi.

Football Insider revealed on deadline day that AC Milan had also registered their interest in Gomez, but the Italian giants were also unsuccessful with “a lot of dominoes to fall” before Liverpool let him leave.

Sources have told Football Insider that Gomez is in no rush to leave Anfield despite that interest from AC Milan, Palace and Brighton, but that could change in January and may be dependent on Guehi’s future.

Football Insider revealed on 3 September that Guehi could be available for £25million in January as his contract at Selhurst Park approaches expiry, and this could set the wheels back in motion for Liverpool.

Speaking on the new Inside Track podcast, O’Rourke stated that Palace’s interest in Gomez came as a contingency for Guehi’s potential departure, and another bid in January could therefore be on the cards.

“There’ll be a lot of dominoes to fall potentially, for Joe Gomez to leave Anfield”, he told Football Insider.

“The thing is with Joe Gomez is that he’s happy at Liverpool, he’s in no rush to leave.

“It’s no surprise that clubs like AC Milan were looking at Gomez – they were looking to bring in a new centre-back.

“There was even interest from Brighton late on in the window and [Crystal] Palace had him on their list as well if they did lose [Marc] Guehi.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s interest in Joe Gomez in January, but a lot will depend on how things are going at Liverpool.”

Liverpool’s squad already looks somewhat unrecognisable to the one which won the Premier League title at a canter last season, with nine new arrivals, eight departures and almost £600million changing hands.

Isak’s £125m move to Anfield came barely 73 days after Liverpool broke their previous transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz for £116m, with ever-presents like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz departing.

Retaining squad players will aid continuity amid this sizeable overhaul in Arne Slot‘s second season, but with Liverpool set to return for Guehi as soon as possible in January, Palace’s interest in Gomez could be a useful bargaining chip.
