Celtic are working to complete the signing of Kelechi Iheanacho on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.

Despite the fact that the deadline has passed, the Glasgow giants are still able to complete a deal for the Nigerian international, after he was released by Spanish side Sevilla.

Sources say that the move is likely to happen due to Brendan Rodgers’ relationship with Iheanacho, which was formed while the pair were working together at Leicester City.

Celtic allowed striker Adam Idah to join Swansea City, but failed to bring in an adequate replacement before the window closed, with a number of deals falling through.

With the transfer deadline passing on Monday evening, Celtic have very few options in terms of who they can bring in to reinforce their attacking ranks.

The Hoops are limited to free transfers, which leaves Iheanacho as the only viable possibility if Rodgers wants to add a centre forward.

There is no doubt that the former Leicester and Manchester City striker is a last-resort signing, after Celtic missed out on Kasper Dolberg.

Meanwhile, Rodgers would need to receive a “big offer” from a Premier League club to walk away from Celtic before the end of his contract.

This comes after a frustrating week for the boss, being eliminated from the Champions League before a 0-0 draw against Rangers at Ibrox.

He is believed to have been left annoyed by the lack of urgency put towards improving his squad, demonstrated by recent poor results domestically and in Europe.

Football Insider revealed on 27 August that Rodgers is high on the shortlist at Nottingham Forest and is in contention for the role should it become available.
