Alexander Isak’s arrival at Liverpool could spell the end of Federico Chiesa’s time at the club as soon as January, sources have told Football Insider.
Chiesa was linked with moves away from Anfield over the summer after playing a limited role in the Reds’ Premier League title win last season, and he may regret his decision to stay at Liverpool in the long-term.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Chiesa is on the shortlists of several clubs heading into the January transfer window, which could see Liverpool choose to cash in.
Arne Slot left Chiesa out of his Champions League squad for the season ahead with the 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha preferred to the Italian, and Isak’s huge transfer pushes him further down the pecking order.
Slot closed the door on a summer exit for Chiesa, and my sources have said that the Liverpool boss is planning to give the 27-year-old a big chunk of game-time during Mohamed Salah‘s absence in January.
Salah leaves for the Africa Cup of Nations at the turn of the year and will leave a void to fill on the Reds’ right flank, and sources have told Football Insider that this will see Chiesa be given plenty of minutes.
My Football Insider sources have stated that Chiesa could still look to leave Liverpool in the January window though, with a view on returning to the fold to be a starter for Italy at next summer’s World Cup.

Liverpool fans expressed their sympathy for Chiesa after he was left out of Slot‘s Champions League squad, and that decision still leaves the writing on the wall for the Italy winger ahead of the next window.
“There’s a number of clubs that will be monitoring Chiesa’s situation at Liverpool”, I revealed on Football Insider‘s new Inside Track Podcast.
“Let’s see what happens to him now the Alexander Isak deal has gone through – that’s another striking option for Arne Slot.
“Will that push Chiesa even further down the pecking order?
You would imagine it would do, and he’s been left out of Liverpool’s Champions League squad due to the numbers, they can’t fit him in there.
“Liverpool will probably need him around January because Mo Salah will be going away to the African Cup of Nations with Egypt.
“That might open opportunities for Chiesa to get more game time, but a lot will depend on Chiesa as well.
“It’s the World Cup next summer, he might want to be playing more regularly if he is to get back into that Italy fold – it seems right now he’s quite happy with his role.”

Chiesa was almost exclusively used as a substitute last season and has come off the bench to good effect this term, scoring a late winner against Bournemouth and contributing to Sunday’s win at Burnley.
Slot may have left his new £125million signing Isak out of the squad at Turf Moor, but hinted that Isak will make his debut against Atletico Madrid in midweek as Liverpool start their Champions League campaign.
Isak‘s introduction to the first-team picture leaves Chiesa with another obstacle to getting more minutes, and the prospect of a January departure will be front and centre of his thoughts, even with the promise of game-time during AFCON.
