Sources: Man City open door for Man United to sign 'unbelievable' player

Sun 14 September 2025 20:00, UK

Man City could open the door for their rivals Man United to strengthen their squad as new concerns emerged ahead of the January transfer window.

Both clubs were busy during the summer and have addressed key areas of their squad, but are also aware of areas of weakness which they failed to address.

Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries has emerged as a key target for both Manchester clubs, who remain keen to strengthen at right-back.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Dumfries would tick a lot of boxes for both City and United should they look to pursue him.

Liverpool were also linked with signing Dumfries in the summer, but opted to pursue Jeremie Frimpong instead, eventually meaning he remained in Italy.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 11 September that Man City could pursue a deal for Dumfries after his transfer confession.

“The Premier League is a fantastic competition,” he revealed via the Mirror, “I’m happy at Inter, but I think I could also do very well in England.

If there were a professional opportunity, I would certainly be interested.”

Dumfries had a £21.5million release clause active during the transfer window, but it had to be triggered by the middle of July which saw City miss their chance.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “City are looking at Dumfries and Man United have been strongly linked with him over the years, but he’s remained at Inter Milan.

“Dumfries is a top player, he’s proven that at the highest level for club and country, but he’s 29 now and that might be a concern for Man City about his age.

“He’s a top player, a real attacking full-back who is probably better going forward than he is defensively, and he would be a good fit for Man City.

“Dumfries would tick a lot of boxes for them and would be perfect for the Premier League, he’s got great power and pace and an eye for goal as well.

“He’s under contract until 2028, so it would take a decent fee to get him out, but he has admitted he would be open to a move to the Premier League, so that will be seen as a ‘come and get me’ plea.

“The only concern for Man City would be his age, so if they decide that’s an issue then maybe it will leave the door open for somebody else like Man United to swoop in.”

As a result, interest in the Inter Milan wing-back is set to hit new heights in the mid-season window, having been on the radar of a number of clubs for a while.

Brown told Football Insider on 8 September that Pep Guardiola wants to sign a new right-back, while the position has been a long-term target for Ruben Amorim.

However, aged 29, Man City may have second thoughts about pursuing a deal for the Netherlands international in favour of a younger option.

Should they decide to walk away from a move, it will leave the door open for Man United to make a move to bring him in when the January window opens.

Gary Neville labelled the right-back “incredible” after his Champions League performances last season [Stick To Football], and he could now be on his way to Old Trafford.

The two Manchester clubs are not the only interested clubs, however, with a number of Premier League sides having been placed on alert by his comments.
