Man United are unlikely to pursue a deal to re-sign David de Gea despite intense speculation surrounding his potential return in recent days.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the 34-year-old’s future and Ruben Amorim’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper.
Fiorentina have no plans to let the Spaniard leave this summer, while he remains happy in Italy heading into the twilight of his career at the top level.
Former United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 18 August that Man United could re-sign De Gea as a short-term option to strengthen in goal.
However, they are instead likely to look elsewhere for a more long-term addition, and any move to bring De Gea back to Old Trafford would be a “massive surprise”.
This comes after Brown told Football Insider on 4 August that Man United want to sign a new goalkeeper as Amorim is determined to upgrade his options.

Moves for Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez and Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma had both been considered at United but are now unlikely.

Andre Onana remains the first-choice under Amorim, but was left out of their opening-day defeat to Arsenal as a result of Altay Bayindir’s displays in training.
O’Rourke has now explained that De Gea can also be crossed off the list of targets at Old Trafford as they will look elsewhere for reinforcements.
“It would surprise me, I don’t really see this move happening,” he told Football Insider.
“Obviously De Gea was back at Old Trafford the other week for that pre-season game with Fiorentina, he got a great reception as you’d expect from the fans.

“So I think it’d be highly unlikely that we would see De Gea coming back to Old Trafford.
“I think the player is happy at Fiorentina.
“Obviously, De Gea now 34, coming into the twilight of his career.
“It’d be a massive surprise to see them turn their attentions to their former keeper.”
Alongside speculation about incoming deals at Old Trafford, a number of players have also been linked with moves away from the club, including Luke Shaw.
However, Brown told Football Insider on 21 August that Man United are set to keep Shaw despite growing interest from a number of Saudi Pro League clubs.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider last month that Man United could accept “huge” offers for Shaw amid interest from Saudi Pro League sides.
However, Amorim has openly praised the England international following his return to fitness and values him as a key member of his squad and dressing room.
