Sources: Man United make new Ruben Amorim sack decision after ‘embarrassment’

Ruben Amorim’s job is safe at Manchester United after they bounced back from their “embarrassing” defeat at Grimsby, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the uncertainty over Amorim’s Old Trafford future.

Bruno Fernandes‘ 97th-minute penalty saved face for Man United against Burnley, securing a last-ditch 3-2 victory which still left Amorim looking “miserable” in the dugout after a hugely turbulent week.

The Red Devils’ disastrous Carabao Cup defeat to League Two’s Grimsby Town on Wednesday had left Amorim’s job hanging by a thread in the eyes of many a pundit, but the Portuguese is secure for now.

Sources have told Football Insider that despite their “embarrassment” at Blundell Park and needing a last-minute penalty to beat Burnley, Man United won’t make a “knee-jerk” reaction on Amorim‘s future.

Football Insider sources state that the Red Devils’ hierarchy still see Amorim as the man to take the club forward, but added that United’s last-gasp win over Burnley has eased the “growing pressure” on him.

Paul Merson had tipped Amorim to resign as Man United manager if Burnley had come away from Old Trafford with three points, but Fernandes’ penalty prevented the Portuguese from making such a call.

Speaking on the new Inside Track podcast, O’Rourke stated that while Amorim is under “growing pressure” at Man United, the club’s hierarchy are not planning to replace the 40-year-old at present.

“Pressure is there as a Man United manager – there’s always pressure on you, no doubt about that”, he told Football Insider.

“Obviously, results will increase that pressure and that defeat to Grimsby was a real embarrassment for the club in that respect.

“That obviously brings pressure itself because of the defeat and the performance, but I don’t think there’ll be any knee-jerk reactions from Manchester United on Ruben Amorim.

“They see him as the man to take the club forward. If results don’t improve, like any manager, your job is going to come under threat.

“It’s a big period coming up for Ruben Amorim, it was a big game against Burnley.

Then there’s the international break, and they go into that break with a victory to ease any growing pressure on him.”

Although a 3-2 victory over newly-promoted Burnley is hardly a statement of intent on Man United’s part, their first three points of the new season will help to ease the scrutiny on Amorim for the time being.

However, Football Insider revealed on 29 August that Kobbie Mainoo feels he is being ‘pushed out’ of Old Trafford by Amorim, following his comments that the youngster is competing for Fernandes’ position.

Mainoo leaving United in the final days of this summer’s transfer window would halt their long-standing tradition of including academy products in the first-team, and if Amorim is the manager to end that run, his popularity amongst fans could take a huge hit.
