Crystal Palace’s £40million valuation of Marc Guehi has left transfer talks with Liverpool at a standstill, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about Liverpool’s pursuit of the Crystal Palace captain.

Guehi’s future at Selhurst Park is up in the air with the England defender into the last year of his deal, and Crystal Palace have been tipped to sell the 26-year-old in the first of three potential exits this summer.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 7 August that Palace would accept bids of £40million for Guehi, but Liverpool have been unwilling to meet that price tag so far in their talks.

Football Insider sources have said that the two clubs remain apart in their valuations of Guehi, as Palace look to maximise his potential fee this summer despite the potential of losing Guehi for free in 12 months.

Sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool would prefer to pay a fee in the region of £30–35m for Guehi given his contractual situation in East London, with this saga expected to run late into the window.

Football Insider revealed on 12 August that both Newcastle and Liverpool were lining up moves for Guehi, but the Reds have since jumped ahead of their Champions League rivals in the race to sign him.

Speaking on the new Inside Track, O’Rourke said that Liverpool’s momentum in this race has slowed as negotiations with Palace continue, and Arne Slot‘s side will continue to try and force Palace’s hand.

“It’s an ongoing situation, the Liverpool interest in Marc Guehi, and there have been more developments”, he told Football Insider.

“The latest information I have today is that Liverpool have reopened talks with Palace to see if a deal can be done before the close of the window.

“The two clubs are slightly apart in valuations; Liverpool think that he should be cheaper than £40million, which Palace are holding out for with the player in the final year of his contract.

“Palace don’t want to lose their captain and star defender on the cheap, they think he’s worth that £40million.

“Liverpool are negotiating, trying to get that figure down to maybe around the £30–35million mark, and talks are ongoing between the two clubs.”

Liverpool’s massive summer spending has re-affirmed their position as favourites to defend their Premier League title, but the vast majority of that £265m outlay has been focused on the front end of Slot’s team.

Jarell Quansah’s £35m move to Bayer Leverkusen has left Liverpool even lighter at the back ahead of the new season, and it’s no surprise to see Slot strengthen with a move for Parma defender Geovanni Leoni.

The 18-year-old and Guehi could both form the bedrock of Liverpool’s backline for years to come, but it remains to be seen if the Crystal Palace centre-back will be on his way to Anfield this summer or next.
