Newcastle United have no intention of selling Alexander Isak to Liverpool unless they can sign a top-class replacement before the window closes.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the Magpies’ search for a new centre-forward and the impact on Isak’s future.

Having missed out on their two top targets, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko, their resolve with regard to the 25-year-old’s sale has grown stronger.

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Football Insider on 8 August that Liverpool’s pursuit of Isak has been delayed after Newcastle failed to sign Sesko.

The new Man United signing has become the latest in a long line of players who Eddie Howe’s side have missed out on this summer, adding to the frustration.

Football Insider revealed on 28 July that Liverpool are increasingly “confident” of signing Isak and are planning to lodge a new bid imminently.

However, Newcastle’s stance has remained firm that they are not prepared to lose their star man, particularly without signing an adequate replacement this month.

O’Rourke explained that there are other dominos that have to fall before Isak can secure a move away, with the club reluctant to lose him.

“Missing out on Sesko is another blow to Newcastle,” he told Football Insider.

“They have been going for these top-level players, but they’ve faced top-level competition as well and that’s what Newcastle have found this summer.

“They thought they were close to getting Ekitike, Liverpool stole a march and brought him to Anfield.

“Joao Pedro, they thought they would bring him in and he ended up at Chelsea.

“Now they’re going to have to look elsewhere for striker reinforcements.

“It probably delays the departure of Alexander Isak as well, in some capacity.

“Newcastle don’t want to let Isak go without having brought in a replacement, and Sesko was seen as the ideal replacement for him.

“There are a lot of dominos that have to fall in the striker merry-go-round.”

Another striker the Magpies have targeted as a potential replacement for Isak is Brentford star Yoane Wissa, who is believed to be keen on the move.

Robinson told Football Insider on 10 August that Brentford are determined to keep Wissa and will dig their heels in to keep him at the club.

Having already lost Thomas Frank, Christian Norgaard and Bryan Mbeumo this summer, the Bees are extremely reluctant to lose another star player.

However, Football Insider revealed on 2 August that Brentford would “reluctantly accept” improved bids for Wissa after turning down Newcastle’s £25million offer.
