Sources: Newcastle to accelerate deal after explosive statement

Sun 31 August 2025 12:31, UK

Yoane Wissa’s public statement on his future will result in Newcastle United changing course late in the transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what his sources have told him about Newcastle’s search for another centre-forward.

Newcastle have finally secured a new striker with a club-record move for Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade, but Eddie Howe still plans to add further attacking reinforcements before the window closes on Monday.

Football Insider revealed on 29 August that Wolves will reject all further bids from Newcastle for Jorgen Strand Larsen, and this could see the Magpies change course and turn their attention towards Wissa.

Wissa‘s desire to move to St.

James’ Park has been no secret throughout the summer, and sources have told Football Insider that Newcastle may submit an increased offer to finally strike a deal with Brentford.

With their pursuit of Strand Larsen on the back-burner, Football Insider sources have stated that Wissa has become Newcastle’s top target again, and the striker’s social media statement on leaving the Bees makes a transfer even more likely.

Football Insider revealed on 29 August that Wissa was unlikely to leave Brentford for Eddie Howe’s side in what is left of the transfer window, but his statement could re-open the door for Newcastle to pounce.

Speaking on the new Inside Track podcast, O’Rourke stated that while Howe would still “love” to add Wissa to his attacking options, Brentford’s need to sign a replacement could delay a deal being struck.

“Eddie Howe would love to bring in another striker”, he told Football Insider.

“If [Newcastle] do decide to put their pursuit of Strand Larsen on the back-burner, they will increase their offer and try to get a deal done for Wissa.

“It is now looking more likely than it did after the statement.

However, Brentford would need time to bring in a replacement as well.”

Brentford have held firm on their transfer stance regarding Wissa this summer and like Wolves, have rejected two bids from Newcastle already, but their own search for a replacement striker is still ongoing.

Football Insider revealed on Friday that Aston Villa had entered talks for Maximilian Beier to potentially pluck the Borussia Dortmund striker from under Brentford’s noses, providing them yet another setback.

Wissa’s clear intent to leave Brentford is good news for Newcastle in the final 48 hours of the transfer window, and all eyes are now on the Bees to kick-start the chain reaction which involves both Wissa and Alexander Isak.
