Sheffield United have opened talks to sign Luton Town star Tahith Chong, sources have told Football Insider.

The Championship outfit are working on a late-window deal for the ex-Man United and Birmingham City attacking midfielder.

Luton are willing to accept a late offer for Chong, 25, as they look to raise funds.

Sources have said that Sheffield United are keen to sign Chong on a permanent deal.

Sheffield United’s interest in Chong comes amid a torrid start to the season for the Blades.

Ruben Selles’ side have lost all three of their opening Championship fixtures with just one goal scored along the way, while they also exited the EFL Cup with a 2-1 first-round defeat to Birmingham City.

Sheffield United have registered the fourth-lowest number of shots on target in the Championship this season (FBref), generating an xG of just 3.9 along the way.

Chong — who joined the Hatters in 2023 — endured a relegation from the Championship with Luton last season and registered just two goals and one assist in 30 league appearances.

However, he still provided plenty of attacking value, averaging a team-high 1.3 successful dribbles per 90 minutes, while sitting second only to Alfie Doughty (27) for crosses (13).

Sheffield United have endured a difficult summer transfer window so far.

The Blades have seen Vini Souza, Anel Ahmedhodzic and Kieffer Moore sold to Wolfsburg, Feyenoord and Wrexham, respectively, for substantial fees.

Meanwhile, Rhian Brewster, Rhys Norrington-Davies and Ivo Grbic have also departed.

Selles has managed to bring in some new faces, with the captures of Danny Ings and Ben Godfrey among the most eye-catching.

But a return of just two goals in four competitive matches this season suggests further attacking reinforcements are needed.

Just two seasons ago, Chong netted five goals in the Premier League despite Luton suffering relegation, while his ability to play on either wing and as a No.10 would provide great versatility for Selles for the long Championship campaign.

Sheffield United have a tough task getting their first points on the board, with their next two matches away at Middlesbrough and Ipswich — the former joint-top after returning maximum points from three games.
