Tottenham and Chelsea were both busy during the summer transfer window, but neither club are completely content with the business they did.

Thomas Frank was left frustrated at Tottenham after James Maddison’s injury left them without a direct replacement despite the late signing of Xavi Simons.

As a result, they remain keen on a deal to sign Aston Villa star Morgan Rodgers, who was a “dream signing” for Chelsea during the transfer window.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Rogers could be tempted to leave Villa in search of Champions League football.

Unai Emery‘s side have endured a dismal start to the season, but sources say the England international is keen to get back to playing at the highest level.

Villa were steadfast in their stance that Rogers would not be sold during the summer transfer window as Emery was determined not to lose his key players.

However, Football Insider revealed on 12 September that Aston Villa could be forced to sell Rogers if they cannot resolve their ongoing concerns surrounding PSR.

Both Spurs and Chelsea have now been boosted in their pursuit, with the midfielder also eyeing a potential exit to return to Champions League football.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “It’s not just Tottenham, I think there will be a lot of clubs looking at Morgan Rogers.

“He’s a top player and showed that for Villa last season, and he’s played well for England is is going to be looking to push to be in the World Cup squad.

“Aston Villa did everything they could to make sure he didn’t have to be sold in the summer and the price tag and everything else ensured there was no deal to be done in the summer, and nothing will happen in January.

“It’ll be interesting to see come next summer where Villa are at and what type of season they’ve had.

“Rogers himself, now he’s had a taste of Champions League football last year, he’s now in that England squad, he wants to continue playing at the highest level.

“I’m sure it’d be more than just Tottenham who’d be interested in Rogers, think you’d have the likes of Chelsea and others who would be interested if he did become available in the market.”

While there are no suggestions Rogers will be available in January, he has been labelled one to watch ahead of next summer’s transfer window.

Rogers’ performances for Aston Villa over the last year have earned him widespread praise and recognition at international level in Thomas Tuchel‘s side.

After being left out of the starting XI to face Andorra, he was given his chance from the start and starred in a 5-0 win against Serbia in Belgrade.

Meanwhile, speaking live on ITV, Roy Keane labelled Rogers “brilliant” and insisted he reminded him of Paul Gascoigne following his performance against Serbia.

With the World Cup on the horizon, the attacking midfielder will be aiming to continue his good form with Villa to remain a part of Tuchel’s long-term plans.

Should Villa continue to stutter, though, there is a chance one of the interested clubs could swoop to take him back to the game’s top level.
