Atletico Madrid are set to drive a hard bargain for Conor Gallagher this summer as Tottenham attempt to bring him back to the Premier League, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what his sources have told him about Tottenham‘s pursuit of the England midfielder.
Gallagher completed a £34million transfer from Chelsea to Atletico last summer as part of a deal which took Joao Felix the other way, but that switch came after Spurs had done their best to hijack the move.
Tottenham tried to complete an eleventh-hour deal for the 25-year-old to no avail, but sources have told Football Insider that Spurs remain keen on Gallagher after they missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White.
Gibbs-White’s proposed £60m move to Tottenham was halted by Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, who accused Thomas Frank’s side of an illegal approach after triggered his release clause.
However, Football Insider sources have said that Diego Simeone will also be hesistant to allow one of his own midfielders to leave in the form of Gallagher, particularly after Rodrigo De Paul’s loan to Inter Miami.

Sources have told Football Insider that Atletico are likely to demand at least £40m from Tottenham in order to sign Gallagher this summer, and it’s also unclear if the England star would even favour the move.

Former scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Gallagher would be “open” to a Premier League return this summer amid interest from Aston Villa and Newcastle, both of whom were told to pay £50m.
Speaking on the new Inside Track, O’Rourke said Tottenham will have to pay over the odds if they’re to join and win the race for Gallagher, particularly after seeing a £60m bid for Gibbs-White come to nothing.
“Tottenham have a long-term interest in Conor Gallagher – they tried to sign him before he made that move to Atletico Madrid”, he told Football Insider.
“It could be a smart move by Tottenham if they are looking to bring in a new midfielder, having missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White.
“He’s on a long-term contract, and if Atletico were to let him go, they’ll be looking to recoup a lot of the transfer fee they paid to Chelsea – it would be around £40million at least.
“Also, with Rodrigo De Paul having left Atletico Madrid, would Simeone be willing to let Gallagher go as well?
I’ve got my doubts on that one.
“It’s a difficult deal to do, a lot will depend on Conor Gallagher.
Does he fancy a return to the Premier League?
“It’s a deal that looks difficult to do for me, but I’m not surprised that Tottenham are looking at him to bolster that midfield.”

With Atletico determined to earn a profit if they do sell Gallagher and Football Insider revealing that Newcastle had been quoted over £50m last month, Tottenham could be very well placed to sign him.
Tottenham have money to spend after launching that ambitious bid to trigger Gibbs-White’s release clause, and Atletico will be keen to extract maximum value for a player about to enter his prime years.
Gibbs-White and Gallagher are very different types of midfielders, but with Spurs in much greater need of steel and stamina in midfield than a fully attack-focused presence, the former Chelsea man could be exactly what they need this summer.
