West Ham are exploring a move to sign Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling on loan as he closes in on a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the 30-year-old’s future and potential destinations as the Blues are prepared to let him leave.

The winger spent last season on loan at Arsenal and could now be set for another short-term move given the money involved in a permanent deal.

This comes after Football Insider revealed on 23 August that Chelsea are struggling to sell Sterling as clubs have been put off by his “huge” wage packet.

Sterling is earning around £300,000 per week at Chelsea, putting off any potential suitors who would be unable to match his lofty demands.

Meanwhile, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 21 August that Sterling’s agent has held talks with West Ham alongside a number of other clubs.

Brown told Football Insider in March that Sterling wants to stay in the Premier League and is “certain” to leave Stamford Bridge if he can find a destination.

However, given the cost of his wages on top of any potential transfer fee, a permanent move is considered unlikely at this stage of the window.

O’Rourke explained that any deal would more likely be on loan, with the Hammers to be joined by Premier League rivals in their pursuit before the deadline.

“West Ham are in need of attacking reinforcements,” he told Football Insider.

“They’re short of attacking options, with a lot resting on Jarrod Bowen’s shoulders.

“So, West Ham are open to the idea of bringing Raheem Sterling in if it was a deal that suited them.

Graham Potter is aiming to bolster his West Ham squad.

“I don’t think they’ll be looking to pay that type of money for him.

“We know that Chelsea are open to letting Sterling leave before the close of the window.

“If Graham Potter feels that he could add something to that West Ham team, then yes.

“And I think there’ll be other clubs across Europe, maybe look at Sterling.”

Alongside the Hammers’ desire to bolster their squad before the end of the window, speculation has arisen about Graham Potter’s future at the club.

Football Insider revealed on 25 August that Potter is facing growing pressure at West Ham after a terrible start to the season at the London Stadium.

A 3-0 defeat to Sunderland was followed by a 5-1 defeat at home to Chelsea, with fixtures against Nottingham Forest, Tottenham and Crystal Palace on the horizon.

However, Football Insider revealed on 22 August that West Ham are not considering sacking Potter immediately, despite pressure, while they have publicly backed him.
