Liverpool have missed out on one of their key transfer targets this deadline day after Crystal Palace pulled the plug on a deal for Marc Guehi.
Guehi had been all set to join the Reds after the two clubs agreed a fee to sign him.
However, despite Guehi undergoing – and reportedly passing – a medical with Liverpool, Palace then decided he would not be allowed to leave.
It is a disappointing outcome for both Liverpool and Guehi, with the 25-year-old now tasked with getting his head straight and heading off on international duty with England.
Guehi’s disappointment will undoubtedly linger for a long while yet, but the former Chelsea man can at least console himself with the fact that he will likely leave Palace in 2026.
Guehi will be out of contract next summer, and his current club will not be able to put the brakes on a move.
But after missing out on him this time around, it has been revealed whether Liverpool are likely to be one of those coming in for him next year.

The real loser in this story is ultimately Guehi.
Although he will surely move on next year, he has been denied an ideal move to the champions of England at a key stage of his career.
When next summer finally comes around, Guehi is likely to have options other than Liverpool.

But according to journalist Lewis Steele, the Reds will maintain an interest in the England star, with ‘incredibly strong admiration’ making another approach possible.

“Don’t want to get into the territory of discussing future windows already but sources say LFC admiration of Marc Guehi is incredibly strong,” Steele reports on X.
“They will remain open to the chances of signing him in either January or next summer, when he will most likely be a free agent.”
Liverpool very well may return to sign Guehi in 2026.
There is clearly a huge admiration for him within Anfield, and that should not be taken for granted.
However, there is an elephant in the room here as to whether they are likely to come back in for him, and that is the situation of Ibrahima Konate.
Konate will be out of contract at the exact same time as Guehi next year.
Should they swap places in the Liverpool squad, there could be few better replacements.
But if the Frenchman ends up signing a new deal, then perhaps Guehi will feel there is no longer a space for him at Liverpool and look elsewhere.
There’s plenty in this story left to run, and it will only become clear in future months whether this is a viable prospect or not.
