Southampton DJ pokes fun at Liverpool fans who booed national anthem as Saints play ‘God Save the Queen’ at half-time… the Sex Pistol’s version

Liverpool fans have been widely condemned for booing the national anthem at Sunday’s FA Cup final – and Southampton had their own unique way of having a dig at the criticised section of supporters.

Although, with Johnny Rotten blasting out the punk anthem, ‘God save the Queen, a fascist regime’, perhaps the Southampton DJ was in fact showing solidarity with the travelling Liverpool support.

Reds fans have a history of rejecting ‘God Save the Queen’ being played at matches, with dislike for the song originating from their discontent with the UK government in the 1980s.

Rather than going down the obvious route of playing the original, the Southampton music team decided to play the Sex Pistols’ version of ‘God Save the Queen’.

Klopp’s side travelled to St. Mary’s on Tuesday night, and it wasn’t long into the first-half that those in the home end began taunting the visiting fans, singing their own rendition of the anthem as they went 1-0 up.

And as the half-time whistle blew at 1-1, those in charge of the Saints PA system decided to poke some more fun at those in the away end in their own clever way.

After the booing happened again on Sunday’s trip to Wembley, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp opted to be open minded about his supporters’ decision.
