But it was all in vain for the La Liga giants, as Virgil van Dijk rose highest in the 92nd minute, planting a header past Jan Oblak at the Kop End.
The Spanish media have reacted to Wednesday's match, a rollercoaster of emotions for Atletico.

Luis Nieto gave his assessment for AS by writing: "Uphill battle.
It's easy to find excuses for Atletico's defeat at Anfield.
"They had to play without key players in each of their lines (David Hancko, Johnny Cardoso, Alex Baena, and Julian Alvarez) and at the stadium of the English champions, who have spent almost as much on one player, [Alexander] Isak, as Atletico Madrid have on their seven signings, who have only lost twice in three years at their legendary stadium, precisely against the last two champions, Madrid and PSG, and who have not [seen an away] win in the Premier League for over a year.
"And yet, Simeone's team had a heroic point within their grasp when the start looked like a historic thrashing.
"A terrible start.
The red-and-whites conceded two goals in the first six minutes, a sin the Champions League doesn't forgive.
"The first was a dud; the second, while they were wondering how the previous one had even gone in.
A shame."

Javier Jimenez of Estadio Deportivo took aim at Robin Le Normand's performance following a difficult start to the season, saying: "If anything was missing from Le Normand's start to the season, it was being pictured in one of the most painful goals Atletico de Madrid has ever conceded.
"The point that the red-and-white team had fought so hard for evaporated in the final moments when Van Dijk headed home the final scoreline to make it 3-2.
"The Dutchman finished without resistance, and all eyes were on the player who would have to cover for the Liverpool giants.
They quickly found him, and it was Le Normand, who was recovering from a very tough start to the season and who once again appears in the picture for a defensive error that cost Atletico de Madrid a goal and points.
"But the reality is that, if we look at the entire performance of Atleti's number 24, the defender was very solid in defence, quick to tackle, and brave in duels.
"The defender once again dominated the defence and, along with Marcos Llorente, was the most reliable defender.
