Trent Alexander-Arnold made his highly anticipated La Liga debut for Real Madrid on Tuesday night as the Spanish giants kicked off their 2025-26 campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The former Liverpool right-back, wearing the number 12 shirt, started the match before being substituted in the 68th minute.

Of course, not many Liverpool fans were that aware that the England international had made his debut.

The Reds faithful appear to have largely moved on from his controversial departure.

This shift in sentiment can be attributed to Liverpool’s extraordinary summer transfer business, which has seen the club invest over £300 million in new signings.

The arrivals of Florian Wirtz for £116 million, Hugo Ekitike for £69.4 million, Jeremie Frimpong for £35 million as Alexander-Arnold’s direct replacement, and defender Milos Kerkez for £40 million have given supporters plenty of reasons for optimism.

The club’s aggressive recruitment drive has effectively overshadowed Alexander-Arnold’s exit, and perhaps that was part of the strategy by the club.

Nevertheless, Alexander-Arnold’s La Liga debut certainly generated some buzz with Spanish media, although perhaps not for the right reasons.

Marca described his performance as “lukewarm” and warned the 26-year-old that Dani Carvajal could take his spot:

“Trent Alexander-Arnold was the most lukewarm, in the same discreet line that was seen during the Club World Cup.”

“He is going to have to be very clever because Carvajal is coming like a shot and he is going to make the starting position very valuable.”

Meanwhile, Spanish outlet El Confidencial claimed that the right-back was shy – with his opposite wing-back in Alvaro Carreras who was a lot better:

“Trent Alexander-Arnold, another league debutant, was shy and it was Carreras who offered solutions from the opposite wing.”

Dani Carvajal is back after a lengthy ACL-related spell on the sidelines, and it seems Trent may have more competition at Madrid than he anticpated.
