Mikel Arteta has been warned that he could be facing huge pressure if he fails to win a trophy with Arsenal this season.
The Gunners finished second in the Premier League for the third consecutive year last term, as well as being knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain at the semi-final stage.
It means that Arteta has not guided the North London side to a single piece of silverware since they beat Chelsea in the 2020 FA Cup Final.
However, this summer the Spanish manager has been backed in the transfer market, with Arsenal signing the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze, and Martin Zubimendi, among others.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Arteta is now expected to win the Premier League title after that level of expenditure.

This article contains exclusive comment from Keith Wyness, former Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen CEO.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Arteta has to challenge for the Premier League with Arsenal this season, and winning just the FA Cup or League Cup wouldn’t cut it.

The Gunners haven’t been crowned champions of England since their famous invincibles triumph in 2004 under Arsene Wenger.
Wyness added that he doesn’t necessarily think Arteta will be sacked if he doesn’t win the league, but it is a possibility, especially if Arsenal don’t at least put up a strong fight.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “What is the motivation behind the spending?
“The whole gossip has been about, if Arteta doesn’t do it, will he be for the chop?
I don’t necessarily think that’s the case, but I do think that he’s expected to land the title with this sort of expenditure.
“I think an FA Cup and a League Cup wouldn’t cut it.
Now, if it’s as close as last year or even closer, then he might be forgiven if he loses it by three points or less if it’s really tight.
“They want to be right in that race, and they want to be in Champions League contention as well.
And so the pressure is on Arsenal to a degree.”

Meanwhile, Premier League teams with owners from the USA will reportedly be at the forefront of a push for domestic games to take place overseas.
That is the verdict of football finance expert Dan Plumley, who claims that the situation regarding overseas games was playing out similarly to the European Super League (ESL) in 2021.
The likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Man United, Arsenal, and Aston Villa are all US-owned, as well as Everton and Bournemouth, and Plumley believes they will be the primary driving force.
Sources have told Football Insider exclusively that the Premier League have no plans to play matches overseas as things stand.
