Jarred Gillett should not have interfered as Rodrigo Muniz saw his stunning goal for Fulham disallowed against Brentford.
That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that the striker’s goal should have stood despite a clash with Nathan Collins in the build-up.
Brentford held an advantage over Fulham before kick-off, and Mikkel Damsgaard had opened the scoring at Craven Cottage on Saturday, 20 September, but that would not last for the Bees.
Alex Iwobi and Harry Wilson quickly overturned the deficit before the half-time whistle, Ethan Pinnock’s own goal added a third, and it could have been four had the effort not been ruled out.
In the 59th minute, Muniz forced a powerful strike past Caoimhin Kelleher, but after catching Collins in the face with a stray arm, Michael Oliver felt he had no choice but to disallow the goal after being sent to the pitch-side monitor.
Therefore, Gillett also played a key role in giving a free-kick in the Bees’ favour, and while it did not have an overall effect on the game, it was a decision that left Hackett extremely disappointed.
There were rumours that Muniz was set to leave Fulham during the summer transfer window, but after scoring against Brighton back in August, he made it clear that Craven Cottage was his home.

He would have added another goal to his tally had the effort stood against Brentford.
Sadly, Oliver and Gillett worked together to rule it out instead.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former referee said: “I was disappointed that the goal was disallowed in that situation.
They made it quite clear that there was a foul in the build-up, but it’s very questionable.
“Football is a contact sport, so for me, I’ve got to have a lot of information and clarity to award a goal, award a penalty kick, or disallow a goal.
“I think that action is part of football.
I don’t even think it’s a foul, so I’m surprised that Michael Oliver went with VAR.
“It was a tremendous goal. I’ve got great respect for Jarred Gillett, who was on VAR, but stay out of it.
But once he told Oliver that there’s been an offence, the referee is going to go with the decision, sadly.”
