Stefan Bajcetic’s future still needs to be ironed out in the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.

Bajcetic’s emergence during the 2022-23 season was nothing short of remarkable.

The 20-year-old, who had joined Liverpool from Celta Vigo in February 2021, made his senior debut as a 17-year-old substitute in the famous 9-0 victory over Bournemouth.

What started as a brief cameo evolved into something far more significant as Jurgen Klopp began to recognise the youngster’s exceptional qualities.

By the end of that breakthrough campaign, Bajcetic had accumulated 19 appearances across all competitions, scored his first senior goal in a 3-1 victory at Aston Villa, and established himself as a regular starter in Liverpool’s midfield.

However, the fairytale was interrupted in March 2023 when Bajcetic suffered an adductor injury that would prove to be the beginning of a series of setbacks for the Spaniard.

After recovering from his initial adductor problem, Bajcetic sustained a calf injury early in the 2023-24 season.

Most recently, he then experienced back problems that were identified as growing pains.

Bajcetic’s loan to Red Bull Salzburg in 2024-25 initially showed promise, but after manager Pepijn Lijnders was sacked in December, his opportunities diminished.

He ended up making 19 appearances but just eight starts leading Liverpool to end the loan early.

His switch to Las Palmas in January 2025 proved more positive.

Bajcetic started 12 La Liga matches, played 969 minutes, and impressed in midfield despite the club’s relegation.

And it seems those in La Liga have taken note.

Italian journalist Matteo Moretto has reported that Bajcetic’s priority is a return to Spain, with Girona considering the youngster in the final weeks of the transfer window:

“Stefan Bajcetic is in the final phase of his physical recovery: the player underwent surgery on his hamstring muscle after suffering an injury,” Moretto reported on X.

“He will soon choose his next club: the priority is to return to Spain.”

“Portuguese and Italian clubs are also interested in him.”

“Girona is considering the option of Stefan Bajcetic.”
