Alexander Isak has left it too late to terminate his Newcastle United contract this summer.

Isak has emerged as a top target for Liverpool as they look to strengthen their attacking options before the transfer window closes on 1 September.

Liverpool have seen a bid worth £110million plus add-ons rejected for the 25-year-old striker, with Newcastle valuing him at around £150million.

Isak is currently refusing to play for Eddie Howe’s side and wasn’t named in the squad for their goalless draw against Aston Villa or the defeat against Liverpool.

However, Football Insider revealed on 25 August Isak could still play for Newcastle again if he fails to secure a move to Anfield.

There have been suggestions the Sweden international could invoke Fifa’s Article 17 – effectively allowing him to end his contract under certain circumstances – but that isn’t understood to be a possibility.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “There’s no real revelation from the statements.

“Then there’s also an explicit statement within the Fifa transfer regulations, which say that no player is able to unilaterally terminate their contract after the start of a season, so it’s too late in terms of trying anything funny with Article 17.”

In terms of a potential incoming at St James’ Park, Newcastle have been targeting Jorgen Strand Larsen as they look to sign a new striker this summer.

However, Wolves are believed to be asking for more than £60million to let the 25-year-old leave before the transfer window closes.
