Steve McMahon Names Best Teammate
Steve McMahon, known as the hardman midfielder for Liverpool during the mid and late 1980s, has named John Barnes as the best teammate he ever played alongside at Anfield.
McMahon started his career at Everton before moving to Liverpool via Aston Villa in 1985. At Liverpool, under the management of player-manager Kenny Dalglish, McMahon was a key component in the team that won the league and FA Cup double. While Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish were giants of the club and scored crucial goals — such as Rush’s brace in the 3-1 FA Cup final win over Everton — McMahon singled out Barnes for his exceptional skill and impact.
He said, “I was fortunate, I played with Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish but the best one for me was John Barnes. For two years, John Barnes was sensational – he really was.” This highlights how much McMahon valued Barnes’s abilities despite the presence of other Liverpool legends on the team.
John Barnes, a former England international, was renowned for his skill and creativity, and McMahon’s choice reflects the high regard he held for Barnes during their time together at Liverpool.
