Steve McManaman has been discussing the Premier League title race after a very big weekend past in the competition.

Manchester City took the initiative late on in the season after winning their game against Luton Town 5-1.

Arsenal and Liverpool both lost at home against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace respectively, severely denting their title aspirations.

An all too familiar sight may well start to set in, with Manchester City on course to lift an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola’s side now lead the Premier League table, clear of Arsenal and Liverpool by two points.

The Reds are third, but are only behind the Gunners on goal difference.

Liverpool have Fulham (away), Everton (away), West Ham (away), Tottenham (home), Aston Villa (away) and Wolves (home) remaining in the league.

Man City’s run-in includes Brighton (away), Nottingham Forest (away), Wolves (home), Fulham (away), Tottenham (away) and West Ham (home).

Arsenal arguably have the toughest remaining fixtures out of the trio, with away trips to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United still to come:

Wolves (away), Chelsea (home), Tottenham (away), Bournemouth (home), Manchester United (away) and Everton (home).

Nevertheless, Liverpool have to keep the faith and ensure that they win every remaining game to ensure they have a chance of giving Jurgen Klopp the best possible farewell.

The defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace was a difficult pill to swallow, but the result now means the Premier League is out of Liverpool’s hands.

What did Steve McManaman say about the Premier League title race?

Liverpool icon Steven McManaman has provided his view of the Premier League favourites after an eventful weekend.

McManaman, who was speaking at the launch of Panini’s Official England Sticker Collection Tournament Edition 2024, has earmarked Manchester City as the favourites after the Reds’ stumble against Palace:

“Due to what’s happened in previous years, I’m going to say City are the favourites to win the Premier League again.”

“As a team, they’ve been there, they’ve done it, they know how to control everything, and they know how to handle the pressure.”

“You’ve just got to look at the squad of players they’ve got as well.”

“It’s up to Liverpool and Arsenal to compete until the last kick of the season, but they’re up against a very dominant Manchester City team.”

“We’ve seen them on numerous occasions go on runs between now and the end of the season where they’re unbeaten.

So, everything just points me towards them being the favourites.”

The former Real Madrid man also touched on Ruben Amorim and the difficulties he will have following Jurgen Klopp’s act at Anfield.

Ruben Amorim is believed to be the favourite at this stage, with the Liverpool dressing room reportedly in agreement that Amorim is the best option.

McManaman said on the Sporting manager:

“Jurgen’s not just idolised by the Liverpool supporters, he’s idolised by the people of Liverpool, even a few Evertonians!”

“His legacy will see him go down as undoubtedly one of Liverpool’s greatest ever managers and he’ll be regarded alongside the very best the club has ever seen; Kenny Dalglish, Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.”

“He has an aura about him – his charisma in press conferences, his ability to make people laugh, his warmth and sense of humour has all been excellent”

“Whoever comes in to replace Klopp, it’s going to be really difficult for them.”

“The Liverpool supporters will of course get behind them straight away like they always do, but any drop off and the comparisons to Jurgen will be used straight away.”

“And what an incredibly hard act to follow he is.”

“All fingers seem to be pointing at Rúben Amorim at Sporting.”

“He’s a young man, he’s only 39, just seven years older than Virgil and Salah!”

“But speaking from the view of a player, regardless of who your manager is, you personally want to play well, and you want to be successful.”

“So, whoever comes in, is taking over a group of very talented players, but it’s going to be a hard, hard job to follow Jurgen.”
