Steven Gerrard is reportedly in advanced talks to return to Ibrox as the Glasgow giants accelerate their search for a new head coach.

The former Rangers manager led the club to its historic 55th Scottish Premiership title in 2021 and has been tipped for a sensational return back to the Scottish giants.

Gerrard’s 18-month tenure at Al Ettifaq ended in January 2025 by mutual consent, with the club languishing in 12th place in the Saudi Pro League, just five points above the relegation zone.

Despite signing a two-year contract extension in January 2024, Gerrard struggled to replicate his early success, winning only five of 17 league matches in the 2024-25 season.

His departure marked the end of a turbulent spell that included a shock King’s Cup defeat to second-tier Al Jabalain.

Rangers’ hierarchy, led by CEO Patrick Stewart and incoming sporting director Kevin Thelwell, have identified Gerrard as a top candidate to replace interim boss Barry Ferguson.

He is a heavy odds on-favourite with bookmakers, so much so that bookies have reportedly suspended bets on Gerrard returning to the Ibrox.

Now the Daily Record has reported that the Liverpool legend still has one key issue to iron out before returning to the club where had the most success as a manager.

The Record even claim that Rangers have held preliminary discussions with Gerrard’s camp, who outlined plans to rebuild the squad.

Gerrard and his family have become accustomed to a luxurious lifestyle, residing in a £10,000-a-month mansion in Bahrain.

His wife, in particular, is reportedly reluctant to give up the comforts they enjoy in the Middle East to move to Scotland again.

In fact, the couple has even discussed the possibility of relocating to the United Arab Emirates, with Dubai, one of their favourite holiday destinations, being a strong consideration.

It’s becoming clear that Gerrard will have to convince his wife to make the move with him to the Ibrox should he want to become the manager of Rangers again.

Nevertheless, the club’s incoming owners – a U.S?

consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises – view Gerrard as a “safe pair of hands” to navigate Champions League qualifiers in July and restore stability.
