Unimpressed Steven Gerrard was left on the brink of combustion by a bunch of Liverpool boffins who could barely contain hold themselves together on a landmark Liverpool night back in 2019.

Gerrard was in attendance for the Reds' apparent stress-free 2-0 win over Tottenham in Madrid but found himself drawn to nearby spectators who were raising his blood pressure with Mo Salah scoring early and Divock Origi sealing the victory late on.

The Liverpool legend – 12 months into his Rangers reign – was left smarting by a smattering of over-enthusiastic number crunchers featuring author Ian Graham – who has bared all on his time at Anfield in his bestselling book 'How To Win The Premier League'.

The Kop legend was on cloud nine at the final whistle but had a quick word with those he reckoned caused him undue added stress.

Graham said: "I'd watched the game in the stands with my colleagues from the scouting department.

The initial euphoria at the final whistle had died down and we were watching the players celebrate and get ready for the presentation of the trophy.

"There was a tap on my shoulder: it was Steven Gerrard, the former Liverpool captain and one of the club's greatest ever players.

He told us he'd never been so nervous at a game - as a player, manager, or spectator.

I agreed, saying it had been unbearable to watch.

"He hadn't been worried about the game, he explained, but watching our extreme anxiety for 90 minutes - biting our nails and putting our heads in our hands at every Spurs chance - had rubbed off on him.

He said: "'I wouldn't have been nervous at all if I wasn't sat behind you idiots, watching you kick every ball.'"
