Steven Gerrard’s tenure as manager of Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq concluded in January 2025 after 18 months marked by fluctuating fortunes.

Gerrard’s departure from Al Ettifaq was finalized on January 30, 2025, through a mutual agreement with the club.

At the time of his exit, the Dammam-based side sat 12th in the 18-team Saudi Pro League, just five points above the relegation zone.

Since departing Saudi Arabia, Gerrard has been linked to several Championship and lower-league roles -from Derby County to Carlisle United.

Recently speaking on his coaching future, the Liverpool legend admitted that he wants to take a breather from the coaching role:

“I will go in at some point but when it’s round the clocks, I’ve doing it 18, 19 months, I want to be free, I want to play a round of golf, go down the boozer and have a couple of beers, do normal things that you can’t do when you’re coaching,” he said.

“I’m happy with waking up and being free, doing the family stuff, just being free away from stress.”

But it seems one Premier League side seem to think they can convince the 44-year-old to make a premature return.

According to Birmingham World, Steven Gerrard is reportedly “high up the list” of candidates for the managerial vacancy at Southampton as the club seeks a permanent replacement for Ivan Juric.

The south coast team, currently preparing for life in the Championship following their relegation, is exploring options for a new head coach.

Steve Cooper, who was dismissed by Leicester City in November after a brief stint, is named as the leading contender for the position.

Sean Dyche, another experienced manager, is also considered among the favorites for the role?

While Gerrard’s name features prominently in discussions, other potential candidates have been mentioned, though they are less prominent in bookmakers’ odds.

But there is some Liverpool influence on the Saints bench already.

Adam Lallana has already been confirmed as the assistant manager to interim boss Simon Rusks.

Accumulating 235 appearances for the Saints during his first stint at the club, Lallana then moved on to Liverpool and Brighton, before returning to his hometown club as a seasoned professional.
