Florian Wirtz at Ibrox

Steven Gerrard has told Liverpool they are about to get the best out of Florian Wirtz - having seen him up close during his time at Rangers.

The German playmaker has joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a club record £116million as the Premier League champions splash the cash this summer.

Aged 22, he has penned a long-term deal that is expected to keep him on Merseyside until at least 2030.

And legendary Anfield captain Gerrard reckons the best of the playmaker will be showcased for Liverpool after his exposure to Wirtz.

Back in 2020, Wirtz would pull the strings in midfielder during the Europa League double header with Rangers.

The German side would defeat the Scottish Premiership side both home and away to secure a spot in the quarter-finals - and speaking at an FC Online event Gerrard admitted last impression was left on him.

On Wirtz, Gerrard said: “I watched him playing for the Germany Under-21 team and he also competed against my team at Glasgow Rangers.

“Very talented, very exciting, still young and can still improve and still get better so hopefully we're going to get the best 10 years of his career and I think he’ll help us to be more successful in the future and I wish him all the best."

While the title-winning Ibrox boss still has Rangers on his mind, Record Sport previously revealed that Gerrard bowed out of the race to become manager before the appointment of Russell Martin.

He opted to remain in the Middle East with his family following his departure from Al-Ettifaq last season.
