Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has admitted that he didn't expect to see Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard move into management.

The two former rivals faced off domestically before becoming teammates for England but Rooney admitted that he thought Reds legend Jamie Carragher would be more likely to move into the dugout.

Gerrard is currently out of the dugout after leaving Al-Ettifaq, who play in the Saudi Pro League, in January following 18 months in charge.

The 44-year-old enjoyed success with Rangers, where he guided them to the Scottish Premiership title, before taking his first steps as Aston Villa manager.

He was subsequently sacked after 11 months in charge at Villa Park, with a 3-0 defeat against Fulham bringing an end to his tenure.

Rooney revealed that he was surprised that both Gerrard and former England midfield partner Frank Lampard stepped foot into professional management.

"To be fair, I felt Jamie Carragher would have due to your knowledge," he said on The Overlap Fan Debate.

"You s**** yourself and went into punditry.

When we went away with England, you knew everything about football.

"We all have a general knowledge of football, but his was incredible going back 10, 20, 30 or 40 years.

"There’s some I didn’t see – I didn’t see Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard – I’m sure a lot of people didn’t see me going into management.

"I always thought you would be, I thought Michael Carrick would but that was the only two."

Gerrard has already admitted that he is in no rush to get back into football management following his stint with Al-Ettifaq.

During a recent appearance on Peter Crouch's podcast after his return to Liverpool for their charity match against Chelsea, Gerrard said that he misses the buzz of playing and the replacement of management hasn't quite managed to fill the void.

"I don't want to be back in work mate, no.

I'm happy with waking up and being free, doing the family stuff, just being free away from stress," he said.

"I will go in at some point but when it's round the clocks, I've doing it 18, 19 months, I want to be free, I want to play a round of golf, go down the boozer and have a couple of beers, do normal things that you can't do when you're coaching.

"The next big draw is to get in the dressing room with the lads, run it back, obviously you can't run as fast and the intensity is not the same but to have a game of footy with your mates is the draw.

"I've just travelled seven hours to do this that's why I come back to play at Anfield, full house, see the lads, have a game of footy, great craic.

"I love it you know, I miss it everyday and I speak to Carra and he goes, 'I was made up, I hated the last few years' I miss it every day, every single day.

"I would love to go back and run it back.

"To be honest, 'coaching and management, it'll fill the void, blah blah' it doesn't, it's not the same.

"It's a great job to be around but in terms of the buzz, I didn't appreciate it enough."
