Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has thrown his weight behind the club’s aggressive transfer strategy, particularly their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.
The club has have already secured Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m) and are finalizing Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez (£45m), but Wirtz remains their marquee target.
The 22-year-old German international, who registered 10 goals and 12 assists in 25 Bundesliga starts last season, has agreed personal terms on a five-year contract.
Leverkusen’s €150m (£126m) valuation has led to protracted negotiations, with Liverpool’s latest €130m (£109m) bid rejected, though both clubs remain optimistic of bridging the €20m gap through structured payments.
With Leverkusen already identifying Nico Paz as Wirtz’s successor, the deal’s completion appears inevitable
Now speaking to TNT Sports, the Liverpool legend believes the club is doing the right thing to strengthen from a position on top:
“Well, I think you’ve got to fix the roof while the sun is shining,” Gerrard said.
So [Jeremie] Frimpong is done and there’s obviously a lot of rumours circling around, really good, talented players.
“So it looks like Liverpool are going to be the team to catch and I’ve got every confidence that they are going to get stronger next year.”
Gerrard added that Wirtz is a huge talent and is looking forward to seeing him at Anfield in the near future:
“Well look there’s rumours, obviously, of Florian Wirtz.
He is a big talent, he’s done fantastic for Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen,” the former Al Ettifaq manager explained.
“There’s talk that there’s going to be a really big signing, he’s a big talent [with a] huge future in front of him, so Liverpool is the place for him, let’s hope we can make it happen.”
The 22-year-old publicly dismissed rumors about demanding Alexis Mac Allister’s No?
Don’t believe everything that’s written”.
The player himself has seemingly confirmed that the transfer is imminent and will happen.
