Instagram/@stevengerrardRio Ngumoha’s debut Premier League goal on Monday night epitomized everything that makes football’s great moments unforgettable.
The 16-year-old winger emerged from the bench in the 96th minute, introduced by Arne Slot as Liverpool desperately searched for a winner against resilient Newcastle.
Just four days before his 17th birthday, Ngumoha was tasked with breaking the deadlock in one of the season’s most dramatic encounters.
The goal carried immense historical significance!
Ngumoha became Liverpool’s youngest ever goal scorer at 16 years and 361 days old, surpassing Ben Woodburn’s previous record by nearly eight months.
More impressively, he joined an exclusive Premier League club as only the fourth youngest scorer in the competition’s history, trailing James Vaughan, James Milner and Wayne Rooney.
And when you impress a club legend like Steven Gerrard, you must be doing something right.
The Liverpool icon put the teenager on his Instagram story with the caption: “Top finish, well done kid.”
Meanwhile, the forward told Liverpoolfc.com post-match:
“I’m buzzing.
A good moment, a special feeling, I’m definitely happy,” he said.
“You just have to come on and make an impact and thank God that I did that.
It was just a proud moment.”
He added that he is trying to stay grounded despite hearing the away end chant his name:
“The fans, I heard them screaming my name and that’s a sensational moment I would say.
“But you can’t get too carried away with all the noise, like I said, because at the end of the day I probably do that finish 100 times on the training ground so it’s no different with the fans [here].”
“But obviously the fans backing you there, it’s just crazy.”
“I’m 16 but I don’t want my age to show that I can’t play with the older players?
I want to prove a point that I can play with not just people my age but many ages above.”
