Legendary former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has put out a heartwarming birthday message for son Lio, who turns eight years old this Tuesday.

This prompted a wave of wishes from former Reds teammates.

Two years after the Reds legend finished his Anfield career, passing on the armband in his 710th and final appearance for the club, Gerrard and wife Alex welcomed Lio into the world.

Following daughters Lilly, Lexie and Lourdes, on April 29, 2017, he said: "Lio George Gerrard was born this morning at 4.55am.

Our family is complete."

Updates of his family life suggest Gerrard has passed on his footballing genes with some fantastic garden goals scored by Lio, and earlier this year he even went to play in his football tournament.

The father and son duo have a strong bond, supporting his former team together at March's Carabao Cup Final and more recently attending the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah.

And on Lio's eighth birthday today, the former midfielder has taken to Instagram again with a post dedicated to the special occasion.

He wrote: "Happy 8th birthday Lio [partying face emoji] you make me proud every day kid I love you [red heart emoji, earth emoji] have a special day like you are to me [handshake emoji]."

Seen in the comment section of the post, was vice-captain in Gerrard's era, Jamie Carragher.

Other former Reds Mark Gonzalez and Robbie Keane also sent their best wishes.

Maybe one day there will be a Gerrard in the Liverpool line-up once again, but for now this just remains a huge year for the Gerrard family.

In another update back in January the eldest daughter of the Reds legend Lilly, 21, announced she is expecting a child later in 2025.

Her father has been one of her strongest supporters over the months since.
