Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has been told it is the perfect time for him to make a return to management, and one of his former clubs could provide him with a comeback route.
Gerrard has been out of work since January after leaving his role at Al-Ettifaq, having taken charge of the Saudi Pro League side back in July 2023.
The former midfielder began his coaching career with Liverpool’s academy before taking over at Rangers, where he led the Glasgow side to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021 - the club’s first in 10 years.
Having initially enjoyed a bright start in charge of Aston Villa, things quickly went downhill for Gerrard in the midlands, and he was dismissed after less than a year in charge.
He made the surprise move to Saudi Arabia around nine months later with Al-Ettifaq, but after just a year-and-a-half in charge, he would leave the Middle East, and has not returned to management since.
He has been linked with a return to Rangers though, and with former Southampton boss Russell Martin coming under increasing pressure since taking over the Scottish side, Gerrard’s former teammate Dietmar Hamann believes now could be the ideal time for him to step back into management.

“Steven Gerrard's return was discussed before Russell Martin took over,” Hamann told Adventure Gamers
If Martin were to leave or be dismissed, it might be the perfect time for Gerrard to return, as his comeback didn’t happen earlier this year.
“I believe he would be a strong candidate if they need a new manager.”
Liverpool.com says: It does feel like if Gerrard is to make a return to management, it will have to be soon
The last couple of years haven’t gone to plan for him at all, and those dreams of him becoming Liverpool boss feel as though they’ve long disappeared.
He could still carve out a successful managerial career though, and returning to Rangers - where he’s already adored for his work in leading them to the title - would make a lot of sense.
Frank Lampard is showing at Coventry that you can recover after struggling in the Premier League, and Gerrard needs something similar if he does want to continue down the managerial path
