'Still good enough': David Ornstein weighs in on whether Liverpool could really sign Kevin De Bruyne now

One of Richard Hughes’ remits in this summer’s upcoming transfer market is to add more creativity to the Liverpool squad.

The Reds are set to lose Trent Alexander-Arnold and without the right-back’s incredible vision and ability on the ball, they can look a touch stale at times.

Few are able to pass the ball like Alexander-Arnold, but one player who certainly can is Manchester City legend Kevin De Bruyne.

De Bruyne is set to leave City after 10 stellar years and with his next step not yet clear, Liverpool have been suggested as a surprise landing spot.

Liverpool fans got excited over De Bruyne after the Belgian dropped a big hint that he may actually like to stay in the Premier League after all next season.

And as the rumour mill prepares to go into overdrive, journalist David Ornstein has stepped in to deliver his verdict on whether De Bruyne to Liverpool could actually happen.

There are several good arguments for Liverpool signing De Bruyne this summer.

De Bruyne is a boyhood Liverpool fan as well, and would also not have to uproot his family from the Manchester area.

Furthermore, De Bruyne is best mates with Virgil van Dijk and would surely welcome the idea of competing for more titles at the top of the game alongside the Liverpool captain.

However, despite all of those weighing in the Reds’ favour, Ornstein clearly believes there is very little chance of De Bruyne ending up at Anfield this summer.

“Is this a joke, Marc?” queried the journalist after being asked to comment on the links during a fan Q&A with The Athletic.

“As much as I love De Bruyne and feel he is still good enough to shine in the Premier League, I don’t see him moving to Anfield!”

While this is a bit of a shame, it was never really realistic that Liverpool would look to bring in a soon-to-be 34-year-old De Bruyne on huge wages this summer.

Nevertheless, Arne Slot could likely do with a more creative midfielder in a similar kind of mould.

There aren’t necessarily any players out there who can offer what De Bruyne can, but in terms of a bit of an all-rounder who can create and score, we’d like to see Orkun Kokcu arrive.

Kokcu has had a top season with Benfica and looks ready for a move to the big time this summer.

Having been Slot’s captain during his league title win with Feyenoord, he is a player the Liverpool boss knows well and that may ultimately make the difference.

He’s not De Bruyne, but we’d keep an eye on Kokcu over the summer months.
