'Stinker': Chris Sutton says one Liverpool player was awful for the second game in a row tonight

Liverpool had to weather an almighty storm during the early parts of Monday night’s game against Newcastle United.

The Reds knew they’d be in for a lively reception at St James’ Park following their much publicised pursuit of Alexander Isak this summer.

Liverpool have an excellent record against Newcastle, but the Magpies are a good team and that showed during a frantic first portion of the match.

Liverpool looked overwhelmed as they attempted to hold back not only the Newcastle players, but the crowd as well.

Just as he did last week against Bournemouth, Ibrahima Konate rocked badly in the Reds defence.

Konate was criticised after a poor showing on the Premier League‘s opening night, and after another undercooked display at Newcastle, the Frenchman took a little bit more.

There are a few reasons why Liverpool fans would like to see Marc Guehi signed before next Monday’s transfer deadline day.

While the Reds could do with more defenders in the squad regardless, Konate’s form has been a worry bridging the end of last season and the start of this.

And after seeing him give up a golden chance to Newcastle in the first-half on Monday, Sky Sports commentator Chris Sutton lay into Konate.

“Konate’s had an absolute stinker so far,” said Sutton.

“He didn’t have a good game against Bournemouth.”

Luckily, Alisson Becker was on hand to sort the situation out, but Sutton was not impressed by Konate’s efforts.

“It’s a poor first touch and then Tonali nicks it off him,” said the former Celtic striker.

As well as playing poorly, Konate was also booked for a silly challenge on Anthony Gordon.

With the game as intense and all-action as it was, the 26-year-old is really walking a tightrope in the second-half.

Thankfully, Arne Slot has new signing Giovanni Leoni to call upon from the bench.

Although he’s still only 18, Konate’s form is likely to mean that Leoni gets his debut sooner rather than later this season.

As Liverpool continue to look for a new signing in defence, Konate needs to fix up quickly.
