‘Strange one’: Journalist shares what Liverpool are ‘insisting’ isn't true after striking £116m Florian Wirtz deal

Liverpool are set to make the biggest signing in their history as they close in on a £116m deal for Florian Wirtz.

Liverpool have agreed a fee with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Florian Wirtz, but the midfielder is on holiday until next week, so no announcement is imminent.

This will be the biggest signing in Liverpool’s history, and if all add-ons are met, it will be the biggest signing in Premier League history too.

Liverpool almost broke the British transfer record a few years ago when the Reds bid for Moises Caicedo.

However, according to David Lynch, speaking on his YouTube channel, despite reports, Liverpool are insistent that this is not a British-record transfer due to the fact the add-ons haven’t been triggered yet.

Lynch shared what he’s been told from Liverpool after they struck the Wirtz deal.

The journalist says that the club are insistent that this isn’t a British-record transfer due to the fact there’s only a £100m guaranteed fee.

“It’s £100m guaranteed, as I revealed on Wednesday.

That part of the deal was nailed down.

Now we finally have the information that it’s going to be £16m in add-ons,” Lynch said.

“Liverpool, on their side of things, they’re insisting that it therefore isn’t a British transfer record because those add-ons need to be triggered.

“Of course, it will go down as one, because the total amount is £116m, that outstrips the £115m that Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo.

It’s a strange one with the British record, if you look at certain sources, they say it’s Enzo Fernandez’s move to Chelsea because it’s a more guaranteed amount, so it’s difficult to judge that.

“But, overall, generally, people tend to speak about the entire package.”

Liverpool may be insisting that the deal for Wirtz isn’t a British-record transfer, but no deal worth £116m has ever been agreed in this country before.

This sets a new watermark for Liverpool and the Premier League, and for the first time in over a decade, Liverpool are set to hold the British transfer record.

Andy Carroll represented the last time Liverpool broke the British transfer record, albeit that deal only held the record for a few hours before Fernando Torres signed for Chelsea.

Liverpool have previously broken the British transfer record for Stan Collymore too.

The Reds will be hoping that Wirtz leaves more of a legacy at Anfield than Carroll or Collymore, but whether or not that comes to pass remains to be seen.
