Liverpool supporters were left thrilled by one aspect of Sunday’s performance despite their penalty shootout defeat to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield.

The Reds’ clash with Oliver Glasner’s men handed the defending Premier League champions a chance to kickstart their season with yet more silverware on 10 August.

However, last season’s FA Cup winners instead emerged victorious, as Mohamed Salah missed his spot kick, whereas both Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott saw their attempts saved by Dean Henderson.

Liverpool enjoyed a strong start at Wembley, as summer signing Hugo Ekitike’s impressive strike got the better of Henderson.

Palace equalised via Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty before Ekitike’s fellow debutant Jeremie Frimpong’s goal re-established a one-goal lead for Arne Slot’s side.

The South Londoners then retained greater composure than Liverpool in the penalty shootout as Mateta, Sarr, and Justin Devenny all converted from 12 yards.

One of Liverpool’s most important pieces of business this summer was when the Anfield giants signed Frimpong as their new right back after Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold has deservedly earned a reputation as one of the best attacking fullbacks in the world, and helped the Merseyside club win the Premier League last season by notching three goals and six assists.

But Frimpong’s goal against Crystal Palace, albeit somewhat fortuitous, showed that the former Bayer Leverkusen man can fill Alexander-Arnold’s boots.

The Netherlands international also largely proved his defensive prowess against Glasner’s side at Wembley.

After seeing Frimpong make his first competitive outing for Liverpool, one supporter said on X: “Such an upgrade, while another commented: “(Alexander) Arnold who?”
