Sunderland have completely broken the bank this summer to bring in new recruits to give them the best chance of survival as Lutsharel Geertruida is on the verge of joining the Black Cats.
The Tyneside club have been one of the most active clubs in the transfer window after bringing in the likes of Simon Adingra from Brighton and Nordi Mukiele from PSG.
Moreover, they have started the season in fine fettle, claiming two wins from their opening three matches including a 2-1 victory for Sunderland against Brentford last weekend (30 August).
Now, on the final day of transfer dealings, Regis Le Bris‘ side are pushing on with some last minute additions as Geetruida is on the cusp of sealing his move to the Premier League from RB Leipzig.

According to Keith Downie on X (1 September), the Dutchman is “currently finishing” his medical as the defender edges ever closer to being announced as a new Sunderland player.
Major details have come out of the deal including a £2.5million season-long loan deal as well as the Black Cats having the option to buy the right-back on a permanent basis at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.
The figure is thought to be £18m that would be activated next summer, pending the club’s situation come the end of the season.

One thing that cannot be understated is the extensive amount of money being injected into the football club to stay up in the English top-flight.
In the last two seasons, all three of the newly-promoted sides have plummeted back down to the second division, yet the Black Cats seem hell-bent on surviving this campaign.
Investment has been splurged across the pitch which has seen the squad size soar to beyond 40 players.

Evidently, there is clear intent from the ownership by backing the French manager with the right playres and squad depth to give themselves a good go in the Premier League.
Sunderland have always been a side that belongs in the top-flight and the Stadium of Light will be welcoming the flurry of new additions to the team.
Time will tell whether the risk of heavy investment will pay off as the north east club look to build on their solid undefeated start at home back in the top-flight.
