Alexander Isak’s physical condition remains a major concern following his extended absence from competitive football.

The striker went on strike at Newcastle in August, refusing to train with the first team or make himself available for matches while pushing for his Liverpool move.

He missed Newcastle’s entire preseason, including their Asian tour, and was absent for the club’s opening Premier League fixtures.

Isak also battled with a minor thigh injury during the off-season.

But against Kosovo for Sweden last night, the 25-year-old made his first appearance in a competitive fixture since May 25, when he last played for Newcastle.

And Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson, in what can only be a boost for Liverpool, revealed post-match that the 17-minute cameo was the max he could give safely:

“I gave him the maximum number of minutes.

But we need him next month, the month after that and next year.”

It’s good to see that the Sweden FA is taking such good care of the new Reds man.

Isak also disclosed post-match that both sets of medical teams have been in contact over his fitness.

The striker also was quizzed on his move to Liverpool after the defeat to Kosovo last night, saying:

“It’s great that everything was settled before the camp and that I could focus on playing football again,” Isak said.

“It’s been a fairly new situation for me, but you always learn and develop mentally off the pitch as well.”

“Not everyone has the full picture, but that’s something for another day.”

“I can’t control everything that’s said or written

But I’m happy that I became a Liverpool player.”
