Liverpool have opened talks with Naby Keita over a new contract and are increasingly hopeful of securing an agreement, sources have told Football Insider.

During his four-and-a-bit seasons at Anfield, Keita has made 117 appearances, scoring 11 goals and supplying seven assists.

That has diminished considerably since he signed for £52.75million from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2018.

Liverpool do not want to lose Keita for nothing this year and are working on tying him down to an extension and maintaining his market value.

Liverpool are increasingly hopeful an agreement can be sealed with the player and his representatives, with negotiations progressing well so far.

Liverpool would struggle to get half of that fee for Keita now, mainly due to a series of injuries that have plagued his Anfield career.

The midfielder, 27, is out of contract at the end of the season and could agree a pre-contract with an overseas side in January.
