A lifelong Liverpool fan, described as ‘caring, king and humorous’ died just hours after watching the Reds' triumph in Madrid.

Despite the rapid decline in his health, Joe insisted that he was going to stay alive to watch Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur on June 1.

"Joe said he was comfortable and the doctor had left him in peace to watch his game.” At 2.16am on Sunday, June 2 - four hours after Liverpool had been crowned champions of Europe - Joe passed away.

William Joseph Bithell, known by friends as Joe, lost his battle with testicular cancer, two days after being diagnosed.

Pat said: “On May 30, Joe was diagnosed with very aggressive testicular cancer that had spread to lymph nodes and lungs.

She said: “This was Joe's sense of humour, he joked and praised all members of staff constantly, he was a joy to be around and did not want to be a burden.” Doctors at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary were said to have organised Joe to be given an iPad so he could watch the Champions League final.

Speaking to the ECHO , his sister Pat Foster, 70, from Neston, described how Joe’s adoration for the Reds kept Joe battling to the end.
