Bukayo Saka’s game-ending injury saw Gary Neville raise significant concerns for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side ahead of next weekend.

Supporters were jumping for joy as the Gunners demolished newly promoted Leeds United 5-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, 23 August, but the crowd went silent as their star player went down.

The 23-year-old winger missed a large chunk of games last season, with injuries a likely reason for the team’s failure to win silverware, and subsequently, why Arteta is under pressure from Arsenal fans.

Next up for the North London giants is a trip to Anfield, facing Liverpool, who are expected to reclaim the Premier League title, and the Gunners could now be without one of their best players for the clash.

Watching on from the gantry as Saka lay down on the turf, Neville kept an eye on the England international’s body language before he limped off, suggesting very bad signs ahead of Anfield.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Main Event (23 August, 6:41pm), Neville said: “That doesn’t look good.

Reading his lips, he’s just going, ‘Oh my god.’ He felt something he didn’t like.

Rob Hawthorne chipped in, saying: “Remember, they play Liverpool next week, which is why there are dark clouds.”

Neville continued: “It’s a tough start, but he’s a tough kid, who doesn’t ordinarily go down, if ever.

“That’s why Arsenal have Madueke, Eze, Trossard, Martinelli, Nwaneri, a lot of players who can play in those areas, but none with the quality of him.

It’s a very slow, disappointed Saka who walks off this pitch.”

Luckily, the Gunners had already wrapped up their win over Daniel Farke’s side, with Saka scoring alongside Jurrien Timber and Viktor Gyokeres, but it will still be a major concern for Arteta.

Saka was not the only star to go off injured, with club captain Martin Odegaard also being forced off after an earlier collision during the thrashing of Leeds at the Emirates.

If neither is available for the Gunners’ trip to Liverpool, that will be a huge blow for Arteta’s side, but also a massive boost for Arne Slot‘s side, who are aiming for back-to-back Premier League trophies.

The Reds are yet to play their second game of the league campaign, next facing Newcastle United on Monday, 25 August, which is a grudge match in itself due to the drama surrounding Alexander Isak.

After a summer transfer window of massive spending from multiple clubs, the Premier League title race is wide open, with Man City, Chelsea, and Man United all strengthening hugely over the last few weeks.

While Saka’s injury may be worse than first seemed, or at least that is what supporters will hope, he spent quite a while on the sidelines last season, and that will be a worry playing on Arteta’s mind.

The signings of Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, and Eberechi Eze, to name just a few, should soften the blow, but there will also be Champions League matches to deal with.
