Trent Alexander-Arnold has explained why he was surprised to see one of his teammates leave Liverpool last year.

In professional football players come and go. As we all find out after all nothing in life is permanent. Change is simply the natural order of the world.

Nowhere is this perhaps demonstrated more routinely than in football. Every six months, there are mass transfer frenzies and the whole world stands still to monitor potential transfers as a new window opens.

Perhaps one of the craziest transfer windows at Liverpool was the one that happened last summer. Liverpool were involved in plenty of long drawn out sagas.

They even almost pulled of the record transfer of the summer in Moises Caicedo. Although in the end, that one fell through.

Trent Alexander-Arnold on why Jordan Henderson leaving Liverpool surprised him

Nonetheless, Liverpool were still very busy. The club brought in four new midfielders and sold a plethora of players.

Among the club, captain Jordan Henderson also left the club to join Saudi Arabian side, Al-Ettifaq FC, which was probably the shock of the summer.

Henderson didn’t have a great campaign last season. But he was the captain of the club, and he looked in great shape when he returned to the Reds for pre-season.

It seemed like the 33-year-old was going to continue what he had been doing ever since joining the club. However, the Reds clearly had other plans.

Henderson’s move didn’t just shock supporters though. Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Overlap, Trent Alexander-Arnold revealed he was also surprised by Henderson’s departure.

“Probably Hendo,” Alexander-Arnold replied to Gary Neville’s question when asked about whether he was ever shocked by a player leaving the club.

“That was a surprising one. We had just come back from pre-season and then it was just like, he starts getting in talks and that.

“It’s a bit different now because it’s all over Twitter and Sky, you know a move is happening before it even starts.”

What is Jordan Henderson doing now?

Henderson’s time in Saudi Arabia was of course notoriously brief. He moved on very quickly just a few months later in the January window of this year.

Joining Ajax, there were high hopes that he would be able to resurrect the historic club’s fortunes. But instead he has merely come under criticism in the media.

Ajax have continued to struggle, and a place at Euro 2024 definitely looks uncertain for the former Liverpool captain at this stage.
