Dejphon Chansiri could be forced to cede control of Sheffield Wednesday by the English football regulator.
That is according to football finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that the Owls’ desperate situation could be resolved by a football regulator.
Sheffield Wednesday stunned Leeds United by knocking the Premier League side out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, 26 August.
For 90 minutes (and a penalty shootout), all the pain and suffering caused by Chansiri’s mismanagement of the club could be forgotten.
But despite going a step further than expected in the Carabao Cup and even having their transfer embargo lifted by the EFL, the same financial issues remain at Hillsborough.
Wednesday’s squad is struggling to compete in the Championship, particularly after the departure of Josh Windass to Wrexham.
However, plans for an English football regulator could be the Owls’ saving grace.

This article contains exclusive comment from Dan Plumley, a football finance expert and senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University.
Speaking to Football Insider exclusively, Plumley explained the powers that the regulator will have when it comes to dealing with a club like Wednesday.
He said: “That’s where the regulator comes in and that’s key to this piece, particularly on Wednesday.
But what the regulator will have legal powers to do is to go in and forcibly re-evaluate business plans, force the club to produce more stringent business plans.

“It will force the owners to look at where the money’s coming from, and can they fund that club going forward?
“It will then start to be able to have more power to extract them.
It’s not necessarily a case of looking at this in terms of when the new owner comes in, it’s a case of being able to go in at the point of failure or before the point of failure.”
Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri departed Sheffield Wednesday for Man City earlier in the summer and the fee from his transfer was swallowed up by the club’s wage bill.
And a second young star has made the move from Hillsborough to the Etihad this transfer window.
Romario Collins has joined Man City from Sheffield Wednesday, with the defender agreeing a move to the Premier League powerhouses after impressing for the Owls’ Under-15 side last season.
Not including the academy duo, 13 senior players have departed Henrick Pedersen’s side this summer, with Ethan Horvath the only player to join the club.
