Ibrahima Konate’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain as Real Madrid intensify their pursuit of the French defender, with reports suggesting the centre-back has rejected three separate contract offers from the Reds.

The 26-year-old is already in his final year of his deal at Anfield, placing him in a familiar position to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who completed his controversial move to the Santiago Bernabéu earlier this year for just £10 million.

Liverpool’s stance remains firm – they will “not beg anyone to remain” as contract negotiations reach an apparent standstill.

A new update has now emerged.

The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana has reported that Real Madrid feel that Konate wants to play for them, but that the Frenchman could be using both clubs to secure the best contract possible:

“I haven’t heard anything about Van de Ven but Konate is a different case.”

“Liverpool’s France centre-back is admired behind the scenes at Madrid

He is one of Europe’s elite defenders and his contract ends next summer.”

“I don’t believe he was a real option in this summer window, with all due respect to other reporters’ information.”

“Madrid believe Konate would like to play for them, but we don’t know how hard Liverpool are pushing for an extension.”

“Konate could be playing both sides in negotiations until he chooses the option that suits him best.”
